Somdatta Basu has undergone more than 15 years of intense training under noted singer in Hindustani Classical Music - Smt. Sipra Bose of Lucknow Gharana (a direct disciple of Smt. Begum Akhtar and Naina Devi) and Shri Sujit Chakraborty of Kirana Gharana.
She attained her Masters in Economics, and along with her studies completed her Sangeet Bisharad in both Hindustani Classical Music and Kathak. A gold medalist and National Scholar in Kathak, She is among those rare artists who are having equal mastery over dancing and singing.
Initially starting her career as Kathak dancer under the guidance of Shri Birju Maharaj and Sri Santosh Maharaj. She regularly performed in different festivals both in Indian and abroad. A severe accident forced a break in her dance career and thereafter that she concentrated only on her singing career. Somdatta Acknowledges influence of Smt. Performing the Thumri, Dadra, Gazal, geet, devotional songs, Somdatta is also at ease with modern songs.She has recently launched an album of Modern Bengali Songs – Gaan Pakhi under the banner of Asha Audio, Kolkata.
Prior to this, she has lent her voice as a playback singer for the Bengali movie, “Get Together”, under the music direction of Jolly Mukherjee. Under the direction of Joy Sarkar, she has performed for a playback in the dance drama – Mahalaya in 2011 telecasted in Star Jalsha. She has performed at many events in India, Bangladesh, USA, Kuwait and the UAE.
Keeping with the current trend of reality shows, Somdatta was adjudged the winner at the 2007 Middle East Pakistan SaReGaMaPa contest, hosted by Zee TV, UAE. She also won the 2007 Voice of Dubai contest hosted by Star Plus, UAE. She has to her credit, released 4 albums as a tribute to evergreen Bengali songs of yesteryears, popularly known as “Smriti” (Vol. 1 to 4) published under the banner of Biswas Records, Delaware, USA.
She has also lent her voice for playback in different Television series broadcast on Tara, ETV and Zee Bangla. She is the winner of Tara Bangla’s “Eto Noy Shudhu Gaan”, Aakash Bangla’s “Bhalobashi Tai Gai” and finalists at Zee Bangla’s Golden Voice, all music based reality shows. She has been regularly performing at the North American Bengali Conference hosted in different cities across the United States of America.
